First Impression - Details

I bought these from a major retailer this morning. I wanted to share my first impressions but I don't want to misrepresent any information that a potential buyer might need, so I plan to do this review in 3 parts. Part 1: Packaging: The Bose QC30 comes in a very nice premium packaging. . I'm not usually interested in stuff like this, but I'm sure there will be some unboxing videos on YouTube soon. The kit includes headphones, a case, two additional sets of ear pads (large and small, the middle one is already installed), a short micro USB cable and a user manual. The bag is very nice and has a stretch fabric inner pocket, just like the QC35. Comfort: These are easily the most comfortable in-ear headphones I've tried, with the possible exception of the original Bose IEs. They are much more comfortable than the Bose Soundsport Wireless or Bose QC20. I'm happy with the fit of the medium baits and haven't felt the need to try others yet. The tips are smaller, and the bulkiness of the previous modes I just mentioned is gone - probably due to the neckband. The halter neck adds almost no weight. Update: BT is awesome. I put my iPhone 6 Plus on the table and then walked to the end of the corridor in my office building - about 60 feet. I only had a wall between them but I never lost the signal. As I rounded the corner of the hallway and added two more walls, I started losing and breaking BT. On the right cable is a small control module that contains a standard configuration of 3 buttons that control volume up and down, play/pause, next/previous track, and fast forward/rewind. These controls work like almost all Bluetooth headphones, so you shouldn't have any trouble learning the system. This set has a very unique feature and a real departure from previous NC headphones. There's an additional set of up/down controls on the right earcup cable, allowing you to change the strength of the noise-cancellation. There is a much better method in the iPhone app. You can go from Undo to Full NC using either method. I was in a crowded restaurant and used this feature. I've been playing around with this function and found that there is a big "jump" in NC at just over halfway. Which brings us to the following: Noise Cancellation: Again, this is a very unique system that Bose has used. Due to the variable NC controls and smaller earbuds, the NC doesn't cancel out noise like the QC35 or even the QC20. Both rely on some level of incoming audio blocking, while the QC30 doesn't. It relies entirely on the electronics to provide the CNC. While I find this method more convenient than the QC20, it doesn't offer as much noise reduction in my opinion. The low registers are still suppressed quite well, but the middle and high registers (talking, clicking, etc.) are not canceled either. When playing music this isn't really a problem, but if you're planning on using them without music or for audiobooks or podcasts you might not get the same level of NC as the Bose NC headphones mentioned earlier. You are welcome to ask me further questions about this. Also, I have a flight coming up soon, so I plan to cover that in more detail in the next part of the review. UPDATE: There is an animation in the app that illustrates the NC degree. It is represented by larger sine waves entering the QC20 and smaller smoothed sine waves exiting it. The animation changes depending on the NC degree used. Very cool. I'll post another photo so you can see. Sound: The sound is pretty good for the size of the earbud and doesn't require deep insertion into the ear. However, because of these things, you don't get the deepest bass register with the same authority as the QC35. The bass doesn't break and sounds clean, but not as good as the QC35. I used the test track - Hooverphonic - Inhaler. This is very deep bass and the QC30 reproduced it well, with no crackling or driver breaks. That's pretty impressive for such a small kidney. Then I listed the entire album Zero 7 - Simple Things. It was a smooth and detailed sound at the same time. I liked it very much. I turned the NC all the way down and it didn't take much volume to make the music very appealing. The sound impressions will come later. This completes the first part of the review. I know they're new and will generate interest, so I hope this helps for now. If so, click the "Yes" button below.
