Review on πŸ”Œ Hughes Autoformers PWD30-EPO: Spike Power Watchdog with 30 Amp Shut Off - Enhanced Protection for Your RV by Rich Ferguson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works great but if you install it in the living room the light will be bright!

The device itself works very well. I have three small points that make it impossible for me to give it 5 stars, but depending on where it is installed, this cannot affect you in any way. First; Due to where our power enters the RV, the best place to install it was in the cavity under some drawers next to the circuit breaker panel. This area is in our bedroom, and since the front has diagnostic LEDs and a lighted dog face that changes color to indicate problems, I set it up to be visible from inside the room. If I hadn't done that it wouldn't be possible to see the device without taking out two large drawers, sticking your head through the hole, and lugging around a bundle of cables to see the device. Anyway, the setup turned out great, but the dog face is BRIGHT! I mean very bright, it lights up the room so much at night that we have to cover it with something to sleep. I suspect a firmware and app update might allow the dog's muzzle light to be turned off if there is no problem. Bonus points if the engineers can dim the lights via the app! Second, there is a small but constant hum coming from a large power relay inside the unit. This is to be expected and typical of large AC relays and if they are installed in the basement of your RV you will probably never notice it. Here, too, my special setup underlines this. Finally, it would be nice if you could turn the device on and off from the app. This would serve as a quick way to turn off power in an RV for a variety of reasons when needed. Knowing how these things typically work, updating the firmware and application can provide this functionality, probably without any hardware changes. I like seeing the tension. Current, wattage are metered on my phone - a bonus would be if there was a wifi or wired connection so I could connect the device to some of my DIY RV automation projects, but I'm not holding my breath for that. : ) All in all a good device that seems to do its job well. A few firmware and app updates could really improve the functionality and make it a fantastic device. if you could turn the device on and off through the app. This would serve as a quick way to turn off power in an RV for a variety of reasons when needed.
