Harder pads hurt your hand. For work I bought a large Kensington keyboard and mouse pad which I really like and have had for many years. His long pillow is even softer than this one. It's not a gel like this. I bought this to replace a Brila mouse pad I bought and didn't like it. It was irregular in shape and too hard for me; I had pain in my arm and wrist. This one has a gentler slope from top to bottom, is wider and longer and also softer. This works well for me given the space I have at home. I also like the slight stickiness at the bottom.
