This item is approved by HER MAJESTY (sometimes goes by the name of Fuzz), 15 lbs. A 16 year old cat who lets me live on her territory. Setup is extremely easy, especially when Her Majesty checks in and helps with the process. Immediately after being set up and positioned next to her human roost (bed), Her Majesty stood, noting each step, and proceeded to grab her share of the bed. There was no problem walking down the stairs, grabbing a bite to eat and then coming back for a good nap. The cat definitely agreed. A special message from Her Majesty's Personal Assistant - this saved my bedspread and sheets. My calico no longer has to climb the ceiling to get to me at night as he has gotten too old and heavy to jump on the bed. It's also much easier on the joints than jumping out of bed. It's very durable and very easy to assemble, but the instructions are useless. Here's how to best assemble the item, especially if you do it yourself (with the help of your kitty, of course): 1 - Sit on the floor, take everything out of the box and arrange it around you. Lay the crate on its side in front of you. You will use it as a support for the posts until one side is finished. (Not required if you have someone else helping you, but Her Majesty helped by putting the box inside so it doesn't move.) 2 - Hold the base on its side with the top (fleece side) of is turned away from you. You should be looking at the bare wooden floor. Take one of the tallest racks and place it on top of the box so the hole lines up with the top hole on one end of the fleece side of the base. The box will help support the post. Take the screw and insert it into the rack from below and tighten with an Allen key. DO NOT TIGHTEN TOO! It should be firm enough to hold the pen. They come back after putting the steps on and fully tightening them. If you assemble everything first and then go back and really tighten the screws, it makes it a lot easier to line up all the steps and posts. Believe me. 3. Take the other tallest post and attach it to the corresponding bottom hole. Make sure you tighten just enough to keep the rack stable, but still allow some slack. 4 - Take the next higher posts and attach them with screws in the next holes. After that you can throw away the box as these racks will support the base on their side. 3" on other side. BACK AND FRONT ARE NOT MARKED - 4" back width. The front has a narrower width of 3 inches. The steps should rest against the posts with less overhang as shown in the illustration. Start with the smaller posts, place one of the steps on top, line up the holes and fully tighten. MAKE SURE THE BACK OF THE STEP LEADS TO THE NEXT TALL STAND. This is really important - the longer the ledge, the harder it will be for the kitty to climb down. Tighten the steps properly - this will align the uprights and keep them straight 7 - Reposition the steps and tighten the screws securely. Pay special attention to the top step as you don't have a counter to lean on. Check the tab to make sure the step will not slide back. Step to the side and tighten the bottom screws securely. There should be no movement in the steps or posts. 9 - Pet the cute kitten and place the steps where your cat indicated he needs them.
