These pants are a bit heavy for summer (because they are all cotton) but my 8 year old daughter says she feels comfortable in them, especially these adjustable waistband . She likes that they are tight. To wear them with regular sneakers, she has to unzip the bottom, but that's not a problem. Interestingly, they're almost too short for her (but not quite), so I'd recommend ordering a size up for your son if he's tall at all, and ordering the size you need if you're getting them for a girl to buy.
