Our elderly cat (17 years old) has gradually but steadily lost weight over the past year. Not much at once, so we didn't notice it straight away - then we noticed that his fur was also getting thinner and thinner. The vet said he was very healthy for his age aside from missing a few teeth but had no real suggestions other than to feed him more often. We have always fed him both canned and kibble, but kibble has become increasingly difficult for him to manage. I've read it's great for older cats with this problem. Rudy is still thin, but not only has his hair loss stopped, he's reversed and his coat is looking healthy again, and he's gained a bit of weight - enough to see a difference, and he's more energetic too. and want to play more. He now receives a Wellness Core package twice a day in addition to his regular meals. It's a bit pricey as we're slowly transitioning to just Wellness Core (rather than just pouches), but it's worth it!
