I'm a semi-professional photographer who usually shoots with Canon Series 1 digital cameras. As much as I love the Series 1, there are times when I want to go with a smaller body .I had a 10D a few years ago and loved the feel of the camera and the silent shutter but hated the slow start up and browsing through images.I switched to the 20D but brought it back because of the horrible shutter noise and small LCD.Me still wanted a small body to complement my big and heavy 1D bodies and was very pleased when Canon released the 30D It has a quieter shutter, large 2.5" LCD for checking the histogram after the shot and spot metering. It's also a little better to hold, although not as solid as the 10D. Earlier this year I got my first 30D on IR (infrared) recording company and recently bought another 30D because of the bargain prices. A lot of people threw away their 30D cases when the 40D came out, but I'm not particularly impressed with the 40D (the 3-inch LCD has poor resolution, dusting is a gimmick) and have never seen that I paid another 400 bucks for an extra 2 megapixels as it's worth it. For me the 30D is a lot for such a good camera at the current price. You can see the photos I took with the 30D, 30D-IR and 1D Mark II on my blog: [.] I recommend the Canon 30d to professionals and serious hobbyists looking for a solid camera with good performance. Nikon have some good bodies too, but the visible noise in their images is a lot higher, and I think Canon has a much wider range of lenses, so I'd recommend Canon over Nikon for those who are just starting out and don't have much money otherwise to have. invested in lenses.
