Mounting screw too long

Camera mount mounting screw is too long for the base it is designed to sit on. shorten the screw to ensure a tight fit. tried to screw the screw into the eyelet and pulled the thread out of the eyelet. absolute rubbish. A tripod seems decent, but you can't use a tripod without a secure way to hold the camera.
