Science in a Box with Imagination Fun

A 7 year old got excited about his arrival with this set. So much so that upon opening the shipping envelope it arrived in, part of the box containing the bait was ripped open by impatient hands trying to get to the contents inside. Once opened, there are plenty of ways to put the brain into action to take on the full role of spy mode. In a plastic container in the inspectors' "hidden compartment" were spy goggles, which have small pieces of mirror in the corners of each lens. My kid couldn't wait to put them on and scream what everyone behind her is doing. I even wore them out of curiosity, wondering how something so simple could be used as a fun tool for immersion in an imaginary world, or as a simple prank. πŸ˜‹ Next she chose Jo-Jo headphones. It amplifies the sound around you, but the cord isn't very long, making it a bit difficult to hide somewhere outdoors and keep your distance. It also makes it difficult to maintain the look of the yo-yo, but my daughter didn't care. She had many opportunities to spy on me and her father and eavesdrop on conversations. The periscope was a bit flimsy cardboard and was the main reason I deducted a star. It wasn't very convenient for a small child. The instructions say duct tape might help but I didn't have it and after a few failed attempts to make the tabs on the box look like the brochure picture and hold the mirrors in place. the value this gadget will have for a complete "spying" experience. There's so much in the book to really put you in mission mode and turn the science behind it into a fun, engaging learning lesson disguised as fun. I'm sure as my daughter digs into each mission and learns why and how each gadget costs, I'll get occasional streams of her newfound knowledge. The price of the kit is reasonable for what you include, although I wonder if these items will survive in a house of wild little people and even regular use by my daughters. Time will tell, but I'm sure that over the next few weeks, she and her friends will be enjoying real items for whatever missions they can think of.
