Review on Playz Combustion Building Kit with Cylinder by Cory Whitney

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Some improvements can be made, overall a good product

I am a homeschooled mother of 5 and this seemed like a cool product for a shop project when kids weren't in a real shop wanted to work since it's still so hot outside. I asked two older boys to assemble it. They are 14 and 16 years old and they love working with real tools in a real workshop. They thought it looked boring but I thought it would be a great way for them to learn about the inner workings of an engine. Aside from the fact that it's not an internal combustion engine (obviously because it's plastic!), it appears to function like a real engine. I liked that they give a quick overview of how the engine works and some photos of how the intake works (pictured). When they started collecting it, they got angry because there were no written instructions. I thought this would be great as my 14 year old is dyslexic and hates to read but he pointed out that since no parts are tagged you should search through everything to find a specific part rather than just the relevant part take part and insert. (Photos of instructions and parts are included, arranged as they come in.) Having laid out all the parts separately from the plastic wrap they were attached to made it easier for them to see all the parts, but it would be better if the parts or packages have been marked in some way for identification purposes. There have been a few instances where they had to figure out which screw to use because they weren't told which one, and they all look very similar (picture of the two screw types provided). The main problem with this set is that there are small protrusions where you separate the small pieces from the plastic sheet they are on. (close-up included) These little protrusions make it difficult to fit tiny parts into tiny holes. You will need to file the edge so they will fit. After filing the strips, some of the small dowels are still not quite where they should be and you'll need to squeeze them firmly. 11 and 8 years old. Overall I think it will be a great project once completed. I like that the case is translucent so you can see the inner workings as you work. It's expensive, but if you look at all the other plastic toys, it's comparable in price.
