Edit: After using two of these mats for the past two years and marveling at their comfort and my son's initial reluctance and subsequent acceptance, I decided on something Try- - I took a bath and sat in it myself. I know geniuses, right?! It's totally convenient. I have no problem recommending this for the little ones. In any case, I will probably stick with this rug and order another one in about 8 months when this wears out too. Follow-up: A little over a year later, I ordered a new carpet. The new carpet is practically odorless! To be honest, the first bar is poisonous in comparison. When the mat was a year old, a pair of suction cups broke and it started discoloring. after that it deteriorated rather quickly. Still, I think it's a good product for the price. And now the three-year-old son likes to sit and play on it. I bought this for my 22 month old son because he has outgrown all baby baths. As I said, in the first week it smells strongly of rubber. It was summer so I left the bathroom window open and the smell dissipated over time. My son initially didn't like the mat, partly because he lacked the security of his inflatable tub, but mostly because it was uncomfortable to sit on. So he got up and complained during his bath. After I introduced him to some new bath toys, he decided it wasn't water torture, but he didn't sit down until recently. He seems to prefer standing or kneeling and playing with his toys anyway.
