Review on πŸ‘— Butterick Patterns B4254 Misses' Stays and Corsets, Sizes 12-16 by Jessica Lewis

Revainrating 3 out of 5

ends without lace breaks; Need a very advanced seamstress

Oh my god, commercial quickdraws are really difficult because our current methods don't allow for bundling of the sheath bones or trimming of the seams. My first attempt was a complete disaster, although I am a professional seamstress and historian and followed all directions without question. The problem started with the measurements given on the pattern: for example, a size 12 should have a 34 inch chest and a 28 1/2 inch waist. If you want the final product to be 34" x 28 1/2" for one person, then the pattern is too large. You can't lace it up. Manufactured unchanged, size 12 has the resulting measurements of EXACTLY 34" and 28 1/2" with no front and back clearance for lacing. I had to modify for my client's larger waist and then DOWN to make 5 "lace gaps" (because they will stretch an additional 2" over time). It took days because with such a change it was almost impossible to change the angles of the backbone and neckline, especially if you had to change the length of the back. For real historical samples, add bones only at the top and bottom, except for the tabs, which don't matter. So you have much more flexibility in changing the historical method (which is not the case). A truly hair-raising exterior pattern. But this is my 3rd, I'm figuring out how to repeat and tweak the technique. They have to make bone inserts instead of architraves, like stitch liner stitch like they did in the 18th century. It looks historic and historically validated, but is a modern commercial model and should be treated as such.
