Very soft and absolutely universal. This is a great gift for those who don't know the baby's gender. Even if the gender is not specified, it still offers a very nice design for the child to enjoy as it grows. The size is more than sufficient. for a newborn - you can easily throw a cover over an infant car seat. And in the 30x40 size, it can even be enjoyed and bring much benefit to the baby as it grows in the first year or so. I appreciate the fact that it's not too big. With all the gear parents need to pack, it fits perfectly in a diaper bag or wraps around baby with no added weight. The material is soft and by far the best feature is the one-sided "Minky" material. kids LOVE it! (ha! adults love it!) For those who don't know, minks are tiny bumps (dimples) of softness that babies love to explore and rub with their fingers. because that's how they get to know this world - explore by touch! The opposite side is a flat smooth layer so when combined they offer maximum softness. See attached photos. The only point where this comforter lacks substance is in thickness. This is not a disqualification or a disadvantage in itself – a lighter blanket is always required depending on the time of year/weather when the baby is born. **So just take note. BC it is thinner than other baby blankets - it is made for climates or seasons that tend to be warmer than colder. All in all, for less than $15, this makes a great shower or baby gift...
