Review on πŸ“‘ White Tram Amateur Dual Band Base Antenna (Model 1481) with Enhanced SEO by Brandon Reynolds

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Update: very large, high gain, works well, just make sure you piece it together correctly.

So far so good. I've read all the negative reviews and realized that you have to connect the antenna from the top down by sliding the internal antenna element up and then down so you can tighten it under the hex nut on each side. The next point in tuning is just adjusting by moving the ground ring up and down to change the antenna's resonant range. I have a very low SWR on the APRS frequency. The last thing you need to do is make sure that the sections are screwed together using tools and not just by hand, and then wrap each joint with self-adhesive waterproof tape. Update: I noticed the antenna wasn't working today so I got up and took it off to have a look. Water entered the antenna and flooded the PL-259. How did it happen? Well when I removed the life tape from the sections everything looked fine but there is a small amount of glue in the base of the antenna that is used to hold the lower section of fiberglass in the metal tube where SO-239 is located. You just pulled it out and water got in. Think they could have done a lot better if they put those sections together. I cleaned the parts, sanded the fiberglass, cleaned it with denatured alcohol and reassembled it with JB Weld, then wrapped it in rescue tape not once but thrice. I deleted the other partitions and connected them to the same rescue tape. I'll try to test it on the ground before risking my life to get it back to 50ft. My rating has gone up from 5 stars for notorious water ingress to 3 stars for poor underside bonding. It should be a sealed part that should never fall apart and let water through.

Pros
  • Outstanding overall performance
Cons
  • Something different
