A really handy tripod and a masterpiece of workmanship

I don't often write reviews of my camera gear. For the record, I have a Manfrotto and my tripod has always been a solid Velbon (well made but heavy). So when I saw this, the first thing that caught my attention was the size. I was inclined to think it would be a cheap product, but it isn't. The carbon legs are comparable to those of my Manfrotto, while reducing the overall weight a bit given the many well-crafted aluminum parts, they are still significantly lighter than my Velbon. The craftsmanship on this one is superb: very well made precision parts. The ball head is no exception, it's about 3/4 the size of all the others, that I own - the numbers are small but printed so well that they are easy to read. and panning is smooth. There's a dovetail plate with a clip (and a useless bladder lever), but the great thing about it is how small it packs - definitely a day hike holder. The mid-height extension bolts on and can be left in place to save weight. All brackets can also be dismantled for weight purists. The locking system in the legs is not spring loaded but is still very secure. The twistlocks are all aluminum and work well - there seem to be guides there too, as the legs don't rotate: they run on the same axis as a track or groove. Overall a solid, well-made item and extremely compact. All brackets can also be dismantled for weight purists. The locking system in the legs is not spring loaded but is still very secure.
