I don't know why the reviews say they smell. They don't smell at all. I almost bought it based on the reviews. These cotton balls are great for what you get for the price. I originally bought giant cotton balls for $6 for 70 balls! CraaaaZzzzzy. Some cotton balls are bigger than others, but I think that's because there are so many in the bag that some of them get crushed. Overall they are a good size and you can make them look bigger by spreading them out a bit. I use them to wash my 2 month old baby's butt! He is sensitive to baby wipes and gets rashes easily. Therefore, every time I collect clean warm water in a bowl, I dip a cotton swab into the water and wipe it off. :) It works really well and saves you a bunch of bucks by not buying baby wipes that are actually full of chemicals!
