It is absolutely necessary to use it in conjunction with a sound card; otherwise, the speakers will not turn on. The highs and the mids are really great, but the bass might use some improvement (there is a 2.1 model that includes a subwoofer). However, considering the cost, it's a minor quibble. A grade of two was once given by me due to the noise in the background. I returned it to the retailer within the terms of the guarantee, but this time I bought new ones, and the new ones have noise too. And so they sat there for two years with children on a computer before I decided to buy a sound card and test how they sound with a sound card.
