I have a Singer HD sewing machine but I was interested in the Bernette 05 Academy to order teaching it to my young son how to sew/quilt because it's easy, just mechanical and fast (1100rpm) and also has safety features like finger guards around the needle/presser foot (removable) and slower speed setting (until it's done go on 1100 rpm). ). I took a chance buying the "updated" version to save some money. The sewing machine was new and sewn straight out of the box. I am impressed. It's slightly quieter and smoother than my Singer HD. It has an overlock stitch, suitable for appliqué, as well as a few other stitches that are not on my Singer HD. It has 2 LED lights including one above the machine bed. The pedal cord is longer (for those who complain about the Singer HD pedal's short cord, myself included). It's compact. Continuous. And it came with a nice extension table and lots of sewing feet and other accessories (no quarter-inch guide foot or walking foot, but they can be purchased separately). I plan to decorate it with fun decals and stickers for my son. I still love my Singer HD (1100 SPM). I also have a Necchi Q132A sewing machine (1000 stitches per minute) which is similar to the Singer HD with exactly the same stitch sets and with a side table as the B05. You can't go wrong with these three sturdy mechanical sewing machines. For the money (especially if you can find a good deal) the B05 is the best value in my opinion with its "Bernina" style side table, 2 LED lights, 12 sewing feet and other accessories, 1100 smooth stitches per minute. 2 different speed levels, finger guard (removable) etc. As far as durability goes, only time will tell. So far so good for all three. A better question is which of these sewing machines would I buy again if for some reason I lost all three. Light. Burnett Academy 05. As for durability, time will tell.
