Let me first say that I am very happy with the Olympus DS30. This is the third recorder of this style that I own. The first was the microcassette machine and the second was the Olympus Digital VN-1000. While both are still functional, the DS30 far outperforms the audio quality and of course the transfer rate of recorded audio to my computer for storage and additional uses. or recorded in real-time, the DS30 transmits data via the USB cable and included software. The process is simple and I had no problems the first time I went through the process. I edit files with the software that came with the DS30 to easily export the file to a folder on the PC. I then use my Cakewalk recording/editing software to edit (cut off the rough beginnings or pull out the bits I need to save or edit). The whole process is quite easy if you are used to using audio editing software. I use the DS30 for three main purposes. I get a lot of voicemails, usually around 200 messages a week, and these messages are long and detailed, around 3-5 minutes. When I look at messages I need details and I need to be able to stop and start and also decode them many times. The voicemail packet is not intended to be simply paused or edited. So when I receive voicemail messages, I leave the recorder next to the speakerphone and transcribe as quickly as possible. With the DS30 I can then play, stop and start again later without any problems. Messages to be saved can be transferred to a PC and archived. The second major application is conducting interviews. I'm a writer and it's much better to have an audio recording of an interview for work. Although I take a lot of notes on paper, I can get more details knowing the recorder is working. The recorder records any words and background noises that I might miss during the interview. I write down all the facial expressions, the atmosphere of the place and the details that can be referred to and of course great quotes - after the author has written everything. After all, I always keep it to myself. Even my trusty Franklin Planner hasn't learned to open up and take notes while I drive. In dictation mode (did I mention that the DS30 can adjust the recording sensitivity from lecture to conference to dictation?) I can audio record ideas while driving or record information about places and addresses when it's unsafe or inconvenient to stop the recording . car and take notes. If you haven't had a recorder in this style before, the experience will feel forced at first. Once you adjust to it, you'll quickly find that you can't imagine not having it anymore. I can't say anything about the battery life yet, as I've been using the DS30 extensively for about three weeks and the batteries have been fine so far. My first issue with the device was that it felt fragile for the way I use it. I've been looking for a cover for it to no avail. But to my surprise, after three weeks of active use, not a single scratch remained on the device. I am very happy with the performance, price, quality and reliability of the DS30.
