Vintage 1983 La-Z-Boy simple chairs have a pawl and ratchet to prevent the footrest from falling and the chair from rocking. There is a piece of bent spring steel attached to the stem that fits into the pivot of the footrest arm that pushes the pawl into the ratchet. After about 30 years, this spring steel tires and breaks. And of course you can no longer BUY parts for this classic car. But the concept is simple: measure the gauge and find the right stiff steel wire. It's actually not as easy as it seems; that was the closest, but it's a bit more. Having bent the "legs” under the barrel, we laid the legs down and two of them were able to fit into the barrel - and the chair was fixed.
