This simple, non-electric heating stone with clean lines is a great choice IF your microwave is at or below chest height. (For example, if the microwave oven is higher in the distance, it would be inconvenient and even dangerous to pick up and lift a heavy rock). AND IF you have secure storage (same problem as microwave height). For example on the fridge would be a bad idea. The Chef Buddy Stein is a great choice IF you have a well formed plate/bowl/pan with the right heat transfer material. The bottom of the plate or pot must be level so that it can come into contact with the hot stone. Many plates have a ring on the underside so that they cannot touch the stone with a sufficient area. Some plates are so heavy that they act as insulators. Corelle thin dinner plates work best for us. My husband also uses a large thin Corelle bowl for oatmeal. Even when dinner was almost over for the very slow eater, the surface of the plate was too hot to touch, although not dangerous. A metal bowl is the best conductor of heat. Food that is moist and has a large surface area on the plate retains heat or even heats up particularly well (mashed potatoes, a slice of Salisbury steak).
