Review on πŸͺ“ Stanley 16 971: 6-Piece FatMax Chisel Set for Precision Woodworking by Scott Rodriguez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Do miracles never end?

I don't work with wood, but I do use chisels for things like scraping car seals or when I need a sharp, beveled edge to finish or remove metal on a hinged door , so my chisels are all chipped and chipped. Well, all automotive transmission shops are familiar with the infamous green seals on Honda transmissions that are glued to the body and cannot be scraped off. I wonder why these garages charge so much for transmission rebuilds? Because it takes an hour of work to remove the factory seals! As I am rebuilding a Honda transmission I had to buy a set of new bits and scrapers. After searching for Revain bits, nothing good came of it. Stanley and $$$ Narex were the main standouts, but I don't need the latter for my work. But Stanley? My Gouda! When was the last time something was made in the USA? I was pleasantly surprised to find these chisels are made in the UK, not that it's a hotbed of fine woodworking equipment but it's a welcome change from China or Taiwan. Although I don't think the steel used in these bits (I hope Sheffield?) is as good as Narex's chromoly material. Today I received a set of chisels. I agree with two things from the previous reviews: 1. The case looks fine on the outside, but when you open it the chisels are in a thin, flimsy plastic insert, similar to the packaging you've seen at Harbor Freight Tools back in the day . During shipping, a chisel broke off and scratched the inside of the case. When the chisels come loose from their attachment in this way, they come perilously close to damaging the handles of the chisels next to them. The bits had poor quality control. One chisel had snapped off a corner, another had a recessed edge in the middle, and another had tool jam marks lower down the chisel, probably where it had been jammed when sharpening the point. It all looks like it happened in a factory in the UK. For this reason I requested a replacement set. In general, the chisels are sharp enough for my purposes, and they certainly have a massive construction with steel grommets all around, making each a bit heavy. This makes them suitable for non-wood work.

Pros
  • Patented, ergonomic, high-impact, bi-material handle
Cons
  • Legacy model
