I made a project with my 7 year old kid - he loved it. My only advice is to wash new t-shirts first, otherwise the colors will become very faded after the first wash. To further preserve the vibrancy of the colors, you can rinse tie-dye t-shirts in a vinegar solution after they have been "soaked" overnight, but before the first wash.
