Review on Yongnuo YN 622N TX I TTL Wireless Controller by Oscar Colangelo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Ideal for remote shutter release

I'm a pure amateur but I've managed to invest a lot in lights, both hot shoe and mono lights. Shooting with external flash, which greatly affects your shots, and adding softboxes or umbrellas (even off-camera) is another step towards beautiful lighting. I've used a Nikon CLS and to be honest I've never had a problem with it. I'm not a big fan of the pre-flare, but it's rarely noticeable on recording. That being said, I still prefer radio control over flash control because the radio allows flashes to be hidden behind foreground objects. I've used cheap radio triggers in the past, but it's very difficult to change power levels to control the lights, especially when the flash is mounted on a 10ft light stand. These devices work perfectly as advertised. I can control three different groups of lights like Nikon CLS. This controller allows me to control the power level directly from this unit's menu with other YN-622N units connected to my flashes. I have used these YN-633N units with Nikon, Metz and Yongnuo flashes and everything works as expected. All TTL work well, but as you get more creative with the lighting I think manual adjustments or compensation will play a big part in your shots. I originally bought a third party SU800 radio very similar to this one, but it cost me $100 and its LCD wasn't as intuitive as this one. Also, this more expensive device had to sit on top of the YN622N, meaning it was physically clumsy and even more expensive. I was able to replace this two-unit setup with a single YN-622N-TX. There were no dropouts in any of my tests. I controlled the power settings of all flashes and at one point I had 5 hot show flashes (1 in group A, 2 in group B and 2 in group C) controlled by this unit. I haven't tested extreme distances, but I've tested it through the walls in my apartment and I think few people will have distance issues. For me, traversing walls is more important than distance as I doubt shooting 100ft from my subject. All in all this product works great for me and is a fantastic addition to the YN-622N family. I no longer think it makes sense to just buy these (other) cheap ebay hand prints.

Pros
  • Easy setup
Cons
  • There are even more interesting options.
