Review on πŸŽ’ The North Face Surge Backpack: Elite Performance and Unmatched Durability by Eric Schwalbe

Revainrating 4 out of 5

IMHO the best EDC pack for those who carry electronics.

After a very long search for a backpack that would meet my needs for carrying a laptop and other everyday essentials, with more organization than just a few pockets, the TNF Surge came out on top. Having been using this backpack for over a week now I am very impressed with its comfort and fit. When I first got it, the backpack felt a lot flatter, but it will definitely be more comfortable to carry, not that it's uncomfortable. First. It has more than enough organizational sleeves, all electronics sleeves are fleece lined with extra padding, including sleeves for a laptop, cell phone (iPhone 6s Plus), tablet (iPad, full size, with Otterbox case) and a smaller pocket, in which fits a flip-type charger. The sleeves in the admin pocket area are quite tight when everything is in place, although there's a lot more room in the pockets if you don't have an Otter Box tablet case. I used it on a recent hunting trip to northern Minnesota to carry my outdoor clothing and toiletries and had no problem accommodating everything I needed for 4 days. There was enough room for more gear if I needed to bring more. The backpack straps are angled which makes compressing your load perfect as it pulls the front of the bag up and back. Access to the admin pocket and the two front pockets is no problem when fully loaded and zipped up, and the front carry handle is indeed a sensible upgrade to this pack, making it extremely natural to move around. As for the two front zippered pockets, one is fleece lined and can be used to hold other shielded electronics but I find it ideal for storing handguns, the pocket itself is behind the unlined pocket so that's the only profile , which can be opened, the contents are this bag, although when fully loaded the bag will not show any contents. The side pockets for carrying water bottles are deep and not see through, the Nalgene liter bottle fits perfectly with no fear of falling out or sliding out, I've carried them and an 18oz hydroflask on my daily motorbike rides and haven't slipped up either. Overall, The North Face is once again a solid product that is well thought out. If you were arguing between this and any other pack I would definitely suggest you buy this one, you won't be disappointed.

Pros
  • GENERAL ORGANIZATION. This backpack features a large main compartment for books and folders, a protective padded laptop sleeve and a shelf to keep internal items secure. Also includes an external zip pocket and two stretch mesh side pockets.
Cons
  • Almost never
