My wife and I have a pair of Macbook Pros with 60w chargers. My little one took one of the USB-C cables and destroyed it right away, so I bought it not knowing that it's more for charging phones and tablets. But actually it works perfectly. When I go into the About This Mac power settings, it says the laptop is charging at 60W. So I personally see no reason to spend extra money on a 3.1 cable.
