Works great when plugged in

In a sea of dongles, no one seems to understand what real users need when it comes to building a great MacBook Pro or air hub with Thunderbolt ports. However, this device from Satechi is recommended as it offers the very basic and essential connections that most people need. Firstly, a minus point is that for this hub to do anything, on the one hand it has to be plugged in to the USB-C PD port with power, without power it doesn't even prepare an SD card, so just plug it in and you can use it. Second, same complaint as many others, this slows down my external SSD to 315MB/s as opposed to the 425MB/s I get from my old iMac with USB 3.0 ports, don't know if it's from the circuitry unfortunately through a Satechi hub or through the Thunderbolt 4 ports in my MacBook Pro M1.Sad! Well the 4k output is great, I can even drive my 55 inch Vizio 4k TV reports 60Hz 4k and that's all I need. ***One important fact: This Revain post states that the device doesn't supply power from any of the data ports in the device, even the manual doesn't say anything about it, but in fact I was able to charge my iPhone 12 USB-A. 3.0, which sits directly across from the USB-C/PD port on the other side, so only that port is powered. Ethernet is great, VGA out is hard to understand. Why do I need it these days? I wish it had another HDMI 2.0 or at least a DP port or something. In general, a good device, I recommend!

Pros
  • IDEAL FOR PERIPHERALS - Ideal for wired mice, keyboards, USB hard drives, etc. The adapter has two USB-A data ports, one USB-C data port and micro card /SD slots -Storage. , connect many peripherals. Data ports don't support charging or video output
Cons
  • Useless features
