Review on 🚂 Enhance Thomas & Friends Playtime with the Steam Team Station for iPad by Antonio Bacon

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great idea for adding more physical interaction to iPad games, but MUCH MORE required

This product was purchased as a gift for my daughter's 5th birthday on the recommendation of a friend. The game is a physical complement to the iPad app and requires the player to find the correct train card and insert it into the slot to progress to the next step in the game. My daughter seems to enjoy playing it, but I don't see much repetition once she's done playing the games. It definitely seems better suited for a younger child, but at the same time I'm not a big fan of electronic devices for 3 year olds. In one game you have to take the wagons (all characters of the series) and place them at a distance of 10 giant steps. The station then shouts "Go get Thomas" and the child has to find this card, give it back and after a certain time connect to the station. So you have to get up and move, which is good. But the problem with this is that unless your child is a Thomas fanatic and has memorized all the faces of the moves, they need to be able to read to know which card is which. So it's up to the adult to play at some point (thwarting the goal of most iPad usage, which is to distract your child while you're doing something else). It would also be nice if the games were multiplayer. There's a big difference between the way YOU tell your kids to take turns and a game that actually calls them player number one and player number two. So the GOOD: Adds physical interaction to iPad play and is a neat idea if you're a HUGE Thomas fan. NOT SO GOOD: Limited games that are only for one player and they don't seem to change them at all. The train relay game calls the trains in the same order every time. BAD: This game costs over $30, and you only get two games with the "free" app you download. There is a third locked game and it costs money to play. For $30+ dollars it should have MORE THAN 3 multiplayer games and they shouldn't cost anything extra.

Pros
  • Compatible with iPad 1, iPad 2, iPad (3rd gen)
Cons
  • Expensive
