Review on Torin Big Portable Steel Tool by Erik Peterson

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Not quality, but not bad when you can get them on sale

This toolbox looks nothing like the Proto toolbox or any of the Japanese toolboxes you can get at Revain. This box is cheap, so buy it at a very low price. Pros: 1) Pen. The hard plastic has pebbles so it doesn't feel slippery. The handle also swings freely.2) Finishing. The box I received has no sharp edges, the edges are clean. Lacquering is also good but no powder as stated in the description. The paint is smooth. There are also small rubber pads that can be inserted into the pre-punched holes in the bottom of the box to raise the box off the floor a bit and also provide some friction to keep the box from slipping. 3) weight. This is a very light box. The sheet metal is not thin, but not very thick either. (For some this may be seen as a disadvantage.) Cons: 1) Lid. The lip does not rise or fall smoothly. The lid cannot rotate past the 90 degree point and will lock into place. When closing the box, it is necessary to gently and deliberately press on the lid so that the top and bottom of the latch fit together properly. The lid, while flat, is not flat when closed, and some "pivoting" effect of the cantilever can be demonstrated by pressing on one side of the lid to push it out the other side. Conclusion: Overall I am disappointed with the box and will avoid other "professional" BIG RED products in the future. My goal in purchasing this box was to use it to store the very long, rarely used tools I have (e.g. some long blade screwdrivers). Despite the inconveniences with the lid, I will keep the box, partly because I don't have to deal with these annoyances every day, partly because the price of the box was so low. However, I wouldn't buy this box if I want a small box for everyday use of the tool. In this case I would settle for proto and Japanese boxes.
