Side opening not suitable
The idea of a side-threading needle seemed really fantastic to me. I was dying to try one of these to button up a really pretty skirt. The carving was fine; Thread stays inside. But when I tried to thread the needle through the fabric of the skirt, the small bottom of the side hole caught in the fabric of what I was sewing, pulling the thread behind the skirt. This way the self-threading part catches the thread everywhere, not just when threading the needle. and it damages your clothes.
