My sons were without their Wii for about a month - we had a fault with it not reading discs and probably the laser needed replacing but it seemed best to move on and replace the entire drive. The package arrived on time, but when I opened it it turned out that the disc had been removed from another Wii and was clearly not new. But my boys complained so much that I decided to give it a try and after an hour of taking the Wii apart, swapping out the disc drive and putting it back together, we started playing Super Mario Bros. again. A day later the drive started with the error message "Disc cannot be read, please eject" and ejecting and reinserting worked for a while, after another day it became so frequent that we had to stop. We take the disc out of the Wii for another hour and now we're going back. Here's a lesson, if it doesn't look new, return it immediately, don't waste time installing a floppy disk.
