Review on Purina Fancy Feast Purely Natural Entrees: Delicate Broth Adult Wet Cat Food for Optimal Feline Nutrition by Julie Sutton

Making a positive change in the life of a sick kitten

Firstly I have never had to feed my cats soft/wet food as far as the 'old formula' goes, my cats have never been exposed to it. Also, all "old formula" comments are from 2015. I started using Purely Fancy Feast Entrees in March 2018. I also wanted to point out that the negative comments regarding the "old formula" mention that the item they used was Fancy. Festive snacks. This item is NOT the Fancy Feast (which I saw at Wal-Mart alongside this item). Purely Fancy Feast Entree is labeled on the packaging and is larger (quantity) than the similar looking Fancy Feast Appetizer. Dishes also come in different flavors. Just an observation that may/may not invalidate the angry 1 star reviews. Since I don't use Fancy Feast Appetizers, I don't know their ingredients. Background is required for this product. As mentioned above, I have never fed my cats wet/soft food. Hill's Science Diet dry food has always been my favorite food for the last 2 generations of cats and is still the favorite food for 3 out of 4 of my cats. However, in March 2018, I was introduced to an elderly cat in a bad situation. We simply call the older cat "Chi" to protect the innocent. Chi's human mother saved her from destruction when the government confiscated the pet house. She was one of 12 (of 250) rescued, the rest were euthanized. She was diagnosed by vets with several medical conditions, including feline leukemia, brain tumors, severe allergies and weak gums that couldn't support her teeth (a genetic condition). Her human mother was told that the kitten would not live more than a year. Especially since Mom moved across the country and the vets also said that the pressure of the flight would surely kill her. Chi survived all of this, only to have her human mother move into a house where the owner hated cats. Unfortunately for Chi, her mother actually considered the landlady's suggestion that she be put down or moved out. Not wanting a fourth cat, I couldn't let this little survivor meet her fate because she was "unwell". Despite her hard life, Chi was a very sweet cat. When I received her she was 10-12 years old, 4 pounds, her eyes were caked with constant discharge, blood was pouring from her nose and ears where she scratched until bleeding, a little afraid of human interaction and I was warned that she can only eat a quarter of a can of wet cat food a day or she will vomit (dry cat food is out of the question). Purina Purely Fancy Fantree Entree is here! After seeing her previous owner feed her $0.23 cat food, I chose Purely Fancy Feast for its very natural look and ingredients. According to taste, the first ingredients are always the main protein and its juices. Yes, sunflower oil is used, but reading multiple veterinary journals, pet health articles, and debating whether it's good or bad for my cat (or dog) is inconclusive. Some say it helps keep their coat shiny (as well as other digestive benefits) and should be added to their diet, while others say it's not great (50/50 actually). Anyway, Chi loved food. From day one she ate the whole can without getting sick. She eats up to 3 cans a day, now weighs 6 pounds, walks and plays like a kitten, and after the first month on only wet food, she's snacking on Hills Science Diet dry food between meals. Her new blood came back very healthy. When I still speak to her previous owner and explain that I don't have any of the issues she had with vomiting, dietary needs and allergies, she is speechless. Four months after arriving at Purely Fancy Feast Entrees, Chi is a different cat in a very good way. Chi loves all flavors, but shrimp is difficult for her to eat as there is a whole small shrimp in each container. My other kittens are happy to help her with this as they all love wet food (but only as a special treat). I try to stay away from fish, but Fancy Feast uses skipjack tuna, which has less mercury than other tuna. I also don't use tongol tuna as the cubes are too big for Chi and she can't/won't eat them. But despite this, this dish looks very natural / delicious. Just a side note, I recently noticed a review mentioning that this product helped her cat who was unable to eat due to a genetic condition. More radical than Chi, her kitten was on the brink of death but is now living 2 more years because of this food. Like Chi, the reviewer noted that her kitten now nibbles on dry food between feedings with no problem. Possibly natural ingredients or maybe sunflower oil (which I've read is a good "coating" for sensitive stomachs) but there are at least 2 people (and 2 very special kittens) who are very grateful for Purely Fancy Feast Entrees.

Pros
  • Very good price
Cons
  • boring packaging
