Perfomance? Yes. Value? No.

In short, this is the fastest HEDT processor on the market today. While it's true that few people need it, those who need it can afford it. As for the cost, everything is not so clear here in comparison with AMD itself and Intel flagships. Something interesting happens with CPU space when it comes to online opinions and reviews. While AMD technology has indeed improved greatly over the past five years, the reaction from online fans has been far more extreme. What is particularly striking about the 3990x is the lack of a price discussion in many online reviews. It's just performance, performance and then performance. Companies that implement them in depth will make different decisions than consumers. These are NOT large hardware network infrastructure chips. For the individual HEDT enthusiast weighing the 3990x against AMD's own offerings and Intel's 7/9/10 980XE lineup, the 7980XE represents a surprisingly strong position against the 3990X. If you have or need the money, just buy it, without asking any questions. If you really want to build a home rendering engine at the lowest cost based on performance metrics, spend a few hours reading detailed online reviews written by tech experts. Ignore the online community of enthusiasts and Youtube as they will always emphasize performance. EDIT: I like the comments triumphantly stating that the cheaper SKUs in the AMD lineup compare favorably to the 7980XE or other Intel components. Of course there is, but this review is for the 3990wx, isn't it? It's about how two chips scale in a niche with higher core performance. And for the red-clad AMD fanatics hoping to sniff out an Intel backer, keep an eye out. I have several TR2/4 class HEDT chips in my stable and am happy with them. Not enough? Intel's upgrade to the 7980xe remains worthless because of the extended thermal envelope when a three-year-old chip can still outperform it. World everyone, have fun with your PCs.
