Good Hardware, Terrible Software

Let me save you some time. The best way to use this device with Windows 10 is by using Cyberlink PowerDirector. Hauppauge's own WinTV 8.5 software was unusable for me. I couldn't get the software to switch to the S-Video input. I tried using composite video but since my home videos are old the copy protection worked and I couldn't record. Also, there is no way to change the brightness, tint, or color of the video. I needed a plan B because it was my big Thanksgiving project. Luckily, the video capture hardware itself is pretty good. I ran my camcorder's S-Video output through a Velleman VM106 video cleaner and then connected its S-Video output to this capture key. I had no problem selecting the S-Video input with Cyberlink PowerDirector and was able to adjust the color and brightness which was crucial for good results. I've digitized over 30 hours of video and am very happy with the overall results as my Hi8 tapes are 12-20 years old. I used the "DVD HQ" setting. I'm currently using a free trial of the latest Cyberlink software, but I bought a PowerDirector license about 10 years ago. If you are a regular Windows user, PowerDirector is great mature software. Our family has moved to a Mac so this will be the last real work on my old Windows laptop.
