Review on πŸ“Έ Olympus Pen E-PL8 Camera Kit with 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens, White/Black by Wiktor Prusek ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best purchase in my life, I will definitely buy it again.

I have owned the camera since the end of 2022. In general, the sensations are 4+ or 5-. There are no obvious shortcomings. Sample photos on flickr: Has some pros: 1. JPG quality out of the box (nice and natural colors). 2. Interesting appearance. It's nice to hold in your hands. People confuse with a film camera. 3. Excellent stabilizer. It is convenient to use manual lenses. It's also easy to shoot handheld at slow shutter speeds and low ISO at night or indoors. 4. High degree of customization. You can remap almost any button. Tons of features and settings. 5. The screen is touch sensitive and tilts up. You can focus and shoot by clicking on the screen. Easy to shoot from the hip. 6. The battery lasts long enough (enough for a day) and recharges quickly. 7. Kit lens 14-42 EZ compact. The camera does not fit into your pocket, of course, but it fits in any shoulder bag. 8. Native Olympus optics are quite sharp from an open aperture, no need to pinch to be clear. 9. If you show raw in Lightroom, you get the same thing as in JPG in natural mode. Raw files themselves weigh a little (14 MB), there are no problems with storage. 10. White balance is usually determined correctly. It can only turn yellow in the evening under the light of lanterns. 11. There is no electronic shutter in this camera, but it clicks quietly and with a pleasant sound. With its cons: 1. Capture One still cannot open raw files of this model (it does open E-PL7 and E-PL9). The native Olympus Viewer software is slow. I use Lightroom. 2. I didn't like the art filters. Like effects for instagram. 3. Pretty complicated default menu. I recommend immediately enabling the Super Control Panel. 4. Not a flaw, but just a nuance. If you use old manual lenses, then you need to change the focal length in the settings for stabilization. Otherwise, it will not stabilize properly. He remembers one lens. But if there are two manual lenses with different focal lengths, then you either need to change them constantly, or make a preset and hang it on the control ring. 5. For a whale lens, the exposure to the sun is slightly overexposed. The rest of the lenses are fine. 6. When used with an Olympus 45mm f/1.8 lens, it may sometimes start to click when focusing (drive the focus back and forth). Healed by reboot. 7. There is no way to charge via USB. You have to take the battery out and plug it in. 8. The case itself is metal and does not scratch, but the screen and plastic around it are easy to scratch, I recommend a protective film. 9. The device is heavy, but the grip is not very comfortable. It's hard to shoot with one hand. 10. The flash must be attached separately. By the way, the flash cannot be tilted up. When a flash is connected, if the screen is tilted up, the flash partially covers the screen.
