Expensive but cool

Elephant in the room - cost and video issues. I don't record videos so I don't care about that aspect and Canon have fixed some issues with the latest firmware versions. There is no getting around the costs. Anyone who can/will accept that will get a great camera. I've been an old DSLR snob for a long time, but I haven't touched my DSLRs since I got these. I mainly photograph wildlife (birds) and landscapes. The images I get with the R5 are amazing. I chose R5 over R6 as I knew I would sometimes need to crop some bird images. I can keep the quality while cropping. The eye detection is really amazing. I am always amazed at how well the camera detects birds from afar through bushes and busy backgrounds. That being said, there are times I resort to pinpoint focusing as the camera sometimes misses eye focus. Autofocus is also great for capturing birds in flight. As a longtime amateur, I could never hope to focus fast enough. The R5's eye detection allows me to take pictures I don't normally get. I also use my camera to take photos of my son's soccer games. I can track player movements, focus on specific players in a group, capture fast sequences of movements. At 12 fps in mechanical mode, I can easily stop the movement. I used an electronic shutter and it's smooth as butter. Basically, you're recording a very fast, stop-motion video. The problem is that you don't realize how many shots you're taking while holding the shutter button down. You can fill out the card electronically quite quickly. I only shoot to the SD card slot and never filled the buffer while playing. Again, this is an expensive camera, but worth the price for my use. Outstanding picture quality. Incredible autofocus with eye detection. Good image quality at high ISO (low noise). The ability to use my old EF lenses with an adapter without sacrificing image quality or autofocus speed. I've used the R5 with RF lenses and they added another level of quality and reduced the weight. I'm just not ready to sell all my old EF lenses to invest in an RF-only system.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Long wait
