This rust activator works great in combination with Modern Masters Iron Paint. I have found that the best results are achieved by: 1. Prime the object you are working on. I wouldn't say you absolutely need a Modern Masters primer, I've had great results with Rustoleum spray paint. Apply two coats of iron paint.3. Apply any number of coats of Rust Activator to achieve the desired level of rust. For me it's usually two shifts. I definitely recommend buying a spray cap. Over time, using a brush to apply rust activator will ruin the activator as you mix the activator and dried rust paint combination each time you dip the brush to apply a coat. My bottle of blue rust activator eventually turned orange and my activator started to rust an odd vomit color, so be sure to use a syringe.
