The temperature knob on my old faucet was difficult to turn. Something was stuck inside and the water was either too hot or too cold. Sometimes the water temperature changed dramatically without touching the handle. This cartridge solved the problem. It comes with good instructions. Note that when changing from an existing 1700 Series to a new 1700 Series, some parts are included that you will not need. They are for upgrading the 1500 series. The instructions are clear on this. Perhaps the most difficult part of the installation is removing the compression nut that holds the cartridge in place. It often hardens in place of old mineral deposits. You can try aerosol lube or vinegar. I like to use a strap wrench that grips the nut securely without bending it like pliers. It is recommended to buy a new union nut together with the cartridge. They are cheap. Otherwise just follow the instructions. Before removing the old cover nut, turn off the water supply. Pull out the old cartridge. Remove the springs and washers from the back of the valve body and replace with new ones. Install a new cartridge. Make sure the side marked "hot side" is on the hot water pipe side. Replace cover nut. You may have to turn the water back on to check for leaks. Then reinstall the bushing, fairing and handles.
