Review on B + W 58mm UV Filter (010) for Camera Lens – Standard Mount (F-PRO), MRC, 16 Layers Multi-Resistant Coating, Photography Filter, 58 mm, Clear Lens Protector by David Merculief

Excellent filter with excellent coverage.

The filter arrived within 2 days as promised by Revain, undamaged but the plastic box had a cracked/crushed corner as the filter came in a flimsy envelope. Not amused. About the filter. The filter is beautifully designed. It's definitely heavier than the similar (58mm) Hoya HMC and also the old Tiffen I have laying around. The reflections on the front are very similar or identical to the Hoya and far superior to the Tiffen. The thread is smooth and the filter fits easily into the front of the lens. Better than Hoya. I don't see any visible difference in regular photos with or without a filter. It's good. Now for the bad. The filter was dirty, with spots and a film on it, possibly some kind of oil. Of course, thorough cleaning is required before installation, and this is unacceptable, and hence the loss of a star. All my Hoyas come clean from the factory. The reason I bought a German filter was because I wanted a German filter in front of my Zeiss 50mm Planar f1.4 lens, that's all. While better built than the Hoya I can't tell the difference and may stick with the Hoyas in the future. However, the Hoya tends to scratch and if this filter lasts I will definitely pay a little more for it.

Cons
  • Thin
