Review on Rode SmartLav+ Black: Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone for iPhones and Smartphones - Premium Sound Capture by David Tison

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great if you have the right iPhone adapter!

I bought this to use on the iPhone 8+ (with 3.5mm Lightning adapter). I tested it as soon as I received it with a mock interview at my office. Native iPhone video compared to Shure MV-88 and Rode SmartLav+ with and without extender. The Shure MV-88 was a big improvement, but the Rode was a CLEAR winner and produced great sound with video footage. At the next gig we used the same setup for an event where we were interviewing people in a crowded room. The noise in the room was louder than the interlocutor. Today we tested the microphone again, inside and out. We tested it on our own iPhone Video, iPhone Voice Recorder, as well as Movie Pro and FilmicPro. Nothing. Click on the microphone and you can't hear anything. It was as if an invisible power switch had been turned off. Tried with a Rode extension cord and just the original cord. I changed three headphone adapters, nothing changed. The sound is not recorded at all. Someone else bought one in February and said it stopped working after 4 uses. It may have been a bad batch but I'm disappointed, especially after it worked so well when we first tried it. UPDATE: The problem with this Rode is the adapter used for the iPhone. If you buy a cheap adapter, expect lousy results. I also now use a recording app (Movie Pro) that shows me if a microphone is connected and what the audio levels are. If you have a cheap Lightning adapter and use it in your own video application, you have no idea if you have a connection or not. Now tell me Movie Pro or FilmicPro. When I bought a better adapter it worked perfectly.

Pros
  • Cool product
Cons
  • Only available in black
