Review on Elegant Home Fashions Teton Cabinet Furniture by Jessica Nunez

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Fragile, poor workmanship, door gap, confusing installation, overpriced

not the worst, it's there. I'll start with pleasant remarks: the equipment was neatly packed, nothing was missing. You only need a Phillips screwdriver for assembly. All furniture boards were carefully packed, nothing was damaged. There is an instruction manual, but unfortunately some details are so vague as to be unusable. I had to do some trial and error to figure out how to align certain parts and eventually had to take half apart and start over. I used a hand screwdriver to put the whole thing together rather than a drill because the chipboard was so soft I could feel it crumble and break just by turning the screws by hand. When screwing in the screws, long, thin cracks formed in the material. It was heartbreaking to spend an hour and a half building it only to realize how rickety and flimsy it was. This is probably the thinnest piece of furniture I've ever owned. I've picked up junk furniture from the roadside that's far more durable than this one. I've bought furniture sets from many cut-price retailers and none of them compare to this level of crap. This is the new low. It's so flimsy that when I moved it from one room to another I had to crouch and wrap my arms around it instead of picking it up like a normal piece of furniture; I was afraid it would fall apart on me. Turning loosens the screws that are already stuck in the super-soft, crumbling chipboard with cracks. The paintwork is very poorly applied; it is unevenly smooth in some areas and perfectly textured/clear. It's particularly bad around the door panels, where there are large cracks and accumulations of sawdust that has had an incomplete, incomplete coat of paint sprayed on. Door magnets are mostly useless; a passing person will blow them up. Either they are too weak or they are too far away from the doors. There is a gap between the doors when closed. There's a gap between the two back panels of the case that needs to be covered with a super cheap strip of plastic, but the strip leaves its own gap at the top and bottom of the panels. The backs also have a slightly ominous label stating the product contains chemicals known to cause cancer. I think I would really like to know what these chemicals are and what parts of the product contain them. Lead-based exterior paint is a completely different bead of wax than, say, some copper or cadmium mixed with metal components. The worst thing I think is that it is totally overpriced. It's overpriced even though it was a solid, sturdy part. In its current condition, I can only assume it was some sort of ultra-thrift item, selling for $50-$75. And at that price, I would still get angry and complain. But it sells for $242. I just can not. The only reason I give it 2 stars is because: 1. Visible from a distance2 The top is really nice: thick and voluminous with a nice finish; it seems important 3. All holes have been drilled just so the parts will be unmistakably aligned when reassembled. Also, just a PS: The product info says the cabinet measures TWICE 15" x 34" x 10". Obviously it's not. It's 34" x 26" x 13". And it says the doorknobs are "clean". no They are shiny chrome.

Pros
  • STURDY CONSTRUCTION: Made from durable faux wood to ensure long life
Cons
  • I vaguely remember
