The cheap plastic (NOT rubber) ball included in this set makes it almost useless for adults, although young children will probably be fine with it meet Back and forward. You can hit the ball as hard as you can and it rarely leaves the racquet. To put it another way, if you stretch out a racquet and then throw a ball at it from about 10 inches in the air, the ball just lands on the racquet with a "thump" sound and doesn't bounce at all! If I remember correctly, weren't the original blades hollow with a gold fleck? Either way, it's a solid piece of plywood, although the blade construction seems good for the price. I just can't get past the ball (and you see a lot of the same complaints about available spare balls).
