This is normal for what it is - not ideal. Look for mesh inserts

I love it when I want (or need) to take my 9.5 pound dog and need my hands free. If I had to do it again I would look for another species with a mesh insert so she can lay down and still get some air. She doesn't like being in it, but for the times I want to hold her, that's fine. 9.5 is too heavy for that. I would not recommend it to any dog heavier than 10 pounds.
