We bought a small set (superhero) for my son's 4th birthday and used an oil brush. The colors are thick, like cream shadows, but the colors are vibrant. It would have been difficult to work out the details, but they were perfect for the face painting, like the Dragon Riders in How to Train Your Dragon. It doesn't smear, but we were also able to easily remove the color with a baby wipe.
