The product works. I will not buy again. That's why.

As someone who has owned these wonderful creatures for 30 years (multiple sets), I have a lot of experience with fillers. However, in a frantic search for a more modern and EASIER option, I decided to try a very expensive tasting test. I bought EIGHT different brands. I compared them all to each other as well as to traditional brands, from the tree loving (Dr. Elsey's - Precious Cat) to the more well known. All other conditions were largely retained. (Of course, this isn't a lab or anything.) Here's a thumbnail: I'll probably throw out the "lightweight" filler. There is simply no formula that ensures safe delivery. First flavored. Please don't do this to cats. They have excellent senses of smell. No matter how disgustingly perfumed you may be, it's THOUSAND times worse for her. The smells are overpowering and cling to the hair of the animals. I don't like smells, but more importantly, neither do critters. Excessive licking/grooming follows after each use to get rid of the smell of their fur. So I was excited when I found the unflavored version of the one mentioned (this one). [In the beginning I accidentally bought AROMATIC.] How does it work? The truth is that this filler clumps well. The aroma is elusive. So why am I not happy? Here's why (if the photo doesn't show it): 1) TRACKING: The light weight of this litter means it's acting CRAZY. I have never seen this phenomenon so bad. Pictured after ONE use of each of the two cats. Literally. I put the vacuum cleaner permanently on the "cat litter box”. If they step in wet, NOT ONLY do you get a bedding, you get paw prints all over the place (e.g. on a leather sofa). (Oh, and it'll get stuck between her toes if it gets wet.) Tracking means being followed around the house. You find it in your bed, on your couch. wherever the creature goes, you will find it. Which could be *good* if that wasn't the case. 2) SWALLOWING: Because litter sticks to their paws (and fur) so easily, they groom themselves constantly. A couple of times I've caught a bump just before it almost fell into the treat hole. It worries me (but can be catastrophic for sentient beings). But as bad as it was, the next thing that happened was even worse. 3) BED LICKING: Aggressive belly licking has begun. My big boy has never compulsively licked his stomach (or "mowed" if you like the technical term) in his bikini and leg/ass area in his life. After about two weeks (*&^%!) my lightbulb finally lit up. When I threw away the first batch (Light/Scented) and went to Dr. When Elsie returned he was better and his hair slowly started to grow back. Then I had the bright idea of trying the unscented version of this pen (this one) thinking the problem might be the smell? I was determined. nope He just started his aggressive mowing again today (Day 2).* I feel like such an asshole. My desperate need for a "lighter" filler caused a real problem for my baby. So, yes, he goes straight to the trash and back to Dr. Elsie. For me (and I'm a science savvy person) this is enough to prove that "mowing" is associated with trash. Of course, there could be a third variable somewhere (confusion) that inadvertently caused this behavior. But the fact that my older boy started behavior that stopped when the product was discontinued - TWICE - is proof enough for me. He is NOT a fragile, disease-prone cat. It's tough, relaxed, fun, the greatest snowshoe in the world. He doesn't have any allergies, he's not picky about food, he loves every stranger he meets, etc. I guess that's why it hits me so hard. I hurt my precious baby. I'm just trying to find something more comfortable for me. <sad face> I know this is a highly rated product. This may work well for others. But that was my (unfortunately) experience. I really wanted a new, lighter litter. But I think product science doesn't exist yet. Until they can make a product that cats will NOT swallow or try to lick, it just isn't safe.

Pros
  • Ammonia blocker prevents ammonia odor for at least two weeks when used as directed
Cons
