I can't figure it out

Very nice pens but difficult to change inkor open the pen. I think I broke it. Was a gift for my husband but he couldn't figure it out so its been sitting in the box. He keeps saying he'll fix it. Or he'll get to it. I feel like I wasted money. Even though the price is good if I didn't have this problem.
