Microphone stopped working after 3 months - bad design, bad repair?

I bought this refurbished headset and was quite happy with it for the first few months. After about 3 months the microphone started making static noise and after 4 months it stopped working at all. After investigating the issue, I found that Logitech was largely to blame for the microphone's poor design. There is a cable that stretches every time you pull the mic up or down to enable/disable it. I understand there is a dedicated mic mute button, but I unplugged the mic until it was used. Eventually, the cable can fray, wear out, and become so badly damaged that the microphone stops working. Since the warranty has expired I decided to hack this thing, check everything and maybe learn something. Opening the headset, I confirmed the frayed/broken cable. I also noticed that the little white button that powers the mic was basically broken. I suspect it has something to do with the refurbished aspect of this headset. At first I thought the button might be stuck inside, but no, most just don't have one. It sucks. Even if I had repaired/replaced the broken mic cable, that white activation button would become a problem and I still couldn't use the mic. A repair is still possible, but not worth the effort in my opinion. I advise you to avoid this headset altogether, whether refurbished or new, due to the design flaw of the microphone.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
