I have been a loyal Quest bar buyer for years. I liked the no soy and the short list of ingredients. Then last year they changed their formula and I found the new bars barely edible. So I started looking at other options. I stick with whey protein over soy because it's easier to digest. There are many bars that range from 3 to 400 calories, but as a 5'7" female I prefer the 200 cal bar as a pre-workout snack. GNC sells many of these as individual bars, and this is a good (but slightly pricey) way to buy multiple bars to decide what you like. Here's my personal review of about 200 calorie whey protein bars: 1. Install crunch bars. Simply my favourite. Produced by celebrity chef Robert Irwin. Tastes like candy. My favorite is definitely the peanut butter version, but Cookie Dough, Cookie and Cream are still good. Personally, I find cookies and cream a bit sweet and my least favorite. I don't like eating them on the go because sometimes I have to look for little chocolate chips in my clothes, car, etc. The main problem with these bars is finding a place to buy them. GNC has a large version of these bars (380 calories). Sometimes CVS sells them separately. Walmart sells cases, but they often sell out. My local Walmart has stopped selling the small ones and I don't have the nerve to eat half the large ones. I've tried ordering from Revain but they always come melted. All my friends are obsessed with them now, which is probably why I can't find them in local stores anymore. 190 calories, 16g protein and 3g sugars2. Bars fight crunch. My second favorite after Fit Crunch bars. I have less trouble with them melting when I order them online, but sometimes they get a little stale from Revain. Again, I like the taste of chocolate peanut butter best here. I liked most of the flavors except for the birthday cake flavor which tasted like fruit loops in stale frosting (uniquely awful). They can also be messy to eat on the go, but beat Fit Crunch and Power Crunch in this regard. 210 calories, 20g protein and 5g sugars**Update: I'm concerned about the quality control of these bars. I've bought a few bars from Revain, Kroger and now GNC which were hard/stale rather than the usual soft fill. I haven't decided yet whether I'll continue to buy them and have downgraded my rating**3 accordingly. Crunchy power bars. My husband and I both found them too dry and not much flavor at all. I like the taste of peanut butter because it reminds me of halava (a Middle Eastern candy made from sesame seeds). They can also be dirty to eat. I found them at GNC, Kroger and Walmart (and of course Revain). 200 calories, 13g protein and 5g sugar. They are much tastier chilled. The taste is subtle but pleasant. I love the peanut butter and chocolate mint versions. The texture reminds me of Kit Kat. This is my new second favorite bar.**4. Quest bars. The least dirty of the group. They have a tougher texture than other bars, which keeps them from falling apart. As I said, this used to be my favorite bar, but the new formula has a weird chemical taste that I can't get rid of. 190 calories, 21g protein and 4g carbs **Update: Quest must have changed the formula a bit more because they taste the same as they did before the recipe change disaster in 2015. I only buy them where I know they have new products .**5. Oh yeah victory bar. They are overly sweet with an oddly processed taste. They also have a chewy texture. I imagine they would be easy to eat on the go if I didn't give them away after eating half a bar. 200 calories 21g protein 8g sugar. I got the new Oh Yeah! A bar.6. Baked Protein Bar Fit Elite. Also produced by celebrity chef Robert Irwin. Tastes like a quest bar mixed with chalk. The texture is a little denser than the quest bar. Barely edible. 180 calories 20g protein7. Mission 1 Pure Protein Bar. Taste and texture are similar to Quest bars. These are a little tighter. Flavor is inferior to Fit Crunch, Combat Crunch, and Quest bars. 210 calories 21g protein 1g sugar8. EAS 100% Whey Protein Bar. I only tried the oatmeal chocolate chip version. It tastes like a dense, fluffy granola bar and is one of the tastiest protein bars out there. At 250 calories, I consider this bar more of a meal replacement (plus some fruit) than a pre-workout snack. I've bought them from both Revain and Target and haven't noticed any difference in quality. This is one of the few protein bars I still buy from Revain as most of the others melt during shipping. 250 calories 20g protein 12g sugar
