Review on Metabo HPT D10VH2 Variable Over Molded: Power and Precision for Ultimate Performance by Roberto Manzer

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good budget drill for the price, just know what you are buying

I paid $35 for a drill in 'used' condition. The drill was new, only the box was damaged. At this price, this is a steal - it's a solid budget drill that does what it's designed to do, i.e. H. All purpose household use, fine hole drilling, etc. It's clearly not Milwaukee or Fane which cost five times as much. more.Good: The chuck is made entirely of metal. The gearbox (black part in front) is made of metal. Metal gears. The chuck has very little radial or axial play. This is exceptional for a drill in this price range. The plastic body and the rubber coating are of high quality. It has enough power for a 3/8" drill and the variable speed trigger is smooth. It's fairly short and light, which is great for working in small spaces. It feels good in the hand and is well balanced. The mistake of putting a crappy hammer function, two gears, a clutch, LEDs or whatever in a budget drill. She doesn't have them because she doesn't need them and the drill is smaller and better for her. It's clearly a step up from the Harbor Freight or Ryobi, in the same class as Dewalt or Ridgid etc. The Bad: The cable sucks, it's stiff and a bit short, the gearing has some play that makes it rattle a bit when running idle. The RPM range is quite high (0-2700), which makes this drill less than ideal for driving screws. For a general purpose drill I would prefer something in the 0-1500 range or something like that. If you run it at low rpm, it has very little torque. That's pretty normal for drills in this price range - you'll have to pay a lot more for drills with closed-loop speed control (which increase power as needed). Finally, don't be fooled - Metabo and Metabo HPT are two different companies. Metabo (excluding HPT) is a German company that manufactures high quality tools in Germany. They also make drills. They cost a lot more than these. "Metabo HPT" is the new name of Hitachi, which this year is making household tools where they are made. My guess is that Hitachi acquired the "Metabo HPT" name to make people think they were buying a high quality German instrument when they weren't.

Pros
  • TRIGGER: Adjustable speed trigger with dial for precision work
Cons
  • Large and bulky
