They're cast iron but lacquered, not enamelled. The small one works well as a heat reducer for simmering. The large one has a hole in the center that causes a hot spot in the center of the pan. I bought them to dissipate heat from undersized burners over a larger area. reduce the number of hot spots in the pan and protect large SS pans from warping. The main issue I had was that the paint doesn't hold up well even to medium heat so anything above cooking causes horrible outgassing, the smell and the high heat actually causes smoke. I'll use them for low heat from time to time, but I'll have to keep looking for an enameled cast iron heat spreader.
